Director Biography

Markham Samuels is an independent writer, director, producer, and cinematographer based in Vancouver, BC. His most recent horror film “Firecrow” was completed in the fall of 2024 after a lengthy post-production process, and follows four characters who unknowingly disturb a cryptic scarecrow that has been afflicted with a powerful curse. Complete with dark imagery and atmospheric settings, it is a crisp re-imagining of the age-old haunted scarecrow in the night tale. Markham sought to explore dark themes and mysterious lore, brought to life by eerie environments and the visceral presentation of how monsters can be portrayed on screen in independent film.

As a producer and cinematographer, Markham regularly participates in independent film projects and music videos as producer or cinematographer, collaborating with other filmmakers, artists, and musicians in the Vancouver region. He is passionate about genre filmmaking, horror, and vivid imagery. He is also engaged in the local writing community on a monthly basis, along with the various 48 and 72 hour filmmaking events that take place throughout the year. Markham has worked on several music videos and corporate videos over the past ten years, and completed 5 short films to date, his last one being “Alice in the Dust”, a re-telling of the famous Lewis Carrol story filmed on location amidst the fantastical setting of the annual Burning Man festival in Black Rock City.

A native to Vancouver, Canada, Markham attended Capital University Motion Picture and Production Program, and went on to complete his business degree and professional finance designation while working concurrently in the industry. He is the founder of Whitelf Films, under which he produces all of his projects.
